The book at a glance

How long can
your life stay big?

A flight of stairs. A walk. A game with the children. The “radius of life” describes what we can reach, manage, and feel confident doing. This book explores how important parts of everyday life can remain within reach.

01

Strength for everyday life

Strength, endurance, balance, and mobility: the focus is what matters to you in ordinary life.

02

Understand your habits

Nutrition, sleep, and social connection belong together. The book helps put recommendations in context and identify useful questions.

03

Find a place to begin

Beginner-friendly exercises, simple meals, and an adaptable twelve-week framework turn ideas into practical next steps.

The guiding idea

More room
for your life.

The measure is your everyday life: joining in again, managing a task, or using support to do something you value. The book offers guidance for a realistic next step. Personal experience, fictional examples, and research findings are clearly distinguished.

What you want
to keep within reach.

An unchanged excerpt from Chapter 3: The Radius of Life.

Between making the full jump and giving up completely, there are many possibilities. A smaller task, a gradual buildup, an assistive device, or someone accompanying us may open the way again. The image of the obstacle is an invitation to reflect, not to attempt an unprepared jump.

The obstacle is a metaphor, but it represents something very concrete that can, at least in part, be observed and measured. I call it the radius of life.

Imagine your life as a circle with you at its center. Its radius encompasses everything you can still reach and manage—physically and figuratively. How far can you walk without stopping? How many stairs can you climb in one go? Can you lift your suitcase into the overhead compartment yourself, or do you need help? Do you take a spontaneous trip, or decide against it because it seems too demanding? The radius describes the reach of your life.

The circle changes gradually. One canceled hike tells us little. But when we increasingly opt out while the wish remains, it is worth looking more closely at the reasons.
