Daily magnesium intake and an additional supplement amount are two different figures. When reading a reference number, first clarify what it describes. Foods and drinks already supply magnesium; the figure for total nutritional provision is not automatically needed as a capsule dose.
Which values does the German Nutrition Society give?
| Group | Magnesium per day | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Men aged 19 and over | 350 mg | Total intake, not additional capsules |
| Women aged 19 and over | 300 mg | Total intake, not additional capsules |
| Men aged 65 and over | 350 mg | No higher estimate solely because of age |
| Women aged 65 and over | 300 mg | No higher estimate solely because of age |
The table follows DGE reference values. An estimate guides nutritional provision; it does not diagnose an individual's deficiency. One day below it does not establish disease. [1]
What the 250-milligram figure means
Germany's BfR recommends not exceeding a maximum daily amount of 250 milligrams of magnesium in dietary supplements and dividing that amount across several intakes. This concerns additional magnesium, particularly avoiding diarrhea, not an upper limit for magnesium naturally present in ordinary foods. It is not an instruction to supplement 250 milligrams every day. [2]
How to read your package
Look for the explicitly declared magnesium amount per intended daily serving. The mass of a compound, such as magnesium citrate, is not the same as the magnesium it contains. Also avoid comparing a three-capsule value with a one-capsule value. [3]
Our calculation example: a hypothetical product supplies 80 milligrams of magnesium per capsule. Three capsules provide 240 milligrams. Adding 100 milligrams from a second product gives 340 milligrams of additional magnesium in total. This merely demonstrates addition and is not an intake recommendation.
First make the diet visible
For several typical meals, record which foods are actually present. Whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables are magnesium sources. Use them to plan a varied selection rather than forcing one supposed top-ranking food every day. [1]
With kidney disease or a medically specified intake plan, supplementation needs individual coordination. Recurrent cramps or fatigue should not alone be treated as proof of magnesium deficiency.
Frequently asked questions
Must I take an extra 350 milligrams?
No. The cited value for men concerns total intake.
Is the BfR amount a daily target?
No. It limits additional amounts and does not establish personal need.
Does the entire citrate amount count as magnesium?
No. The declared magnesium amount is what matters.
Can I assess several magnesium products separately?
The additional amounts must be considered together.
