Vitamins, coffee or a shower do not quickly make you sober after drinking. A hangover is also not simply an established vitamin deficiency. The appropriate response depends on whether this is ordinary discomfort after drinking, acute poisoning or problems associated with long-term heavy consumption.
Why a hangover has several causes
NIAAA describes disrupted sleep, stomach irritation and fluid loss, among other factors. There is no proven general remedy that eliminates a hangover or replaces the time needed to recover. Electrolyte products are not an established standard solution for every symptom either. [1]
| Situation | What matters | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Symptoms after one occasion | Recovery, tolerated drinks and food as needed | Expecting immediate healing from vitamin blends |
| Uncertainty about fitness to drive | Do not drive; arrange a safe alternative | Treating your own impression as a reliable test |
| Severe drowsiness or breathing problems | Immediate medical help | Leaving the person alone to sleep it off |
| Regular heavy drinking or withdrawal symptoms | Medical support and, where appropriate, addiction counseling | Self-treating possible dependence with supplements |
What makes sense the next day?
Do not plan safety-critical tasks while you feel impaired. NIAAA notes that attention and coordination may remain affected during a hangover even after blood alcohol has returned to zero. Further alcohol prolongs the problem rather than solving it. Painkillers are not automatically harmless either; some combinations can affect the stomach or liver. [1]
A simple practical decision is to rearrange travel and demanding appointments in good time. If you cannot keep fluids down, become markedly weaker or develop unusual symptoms, seek medical advice rather than trying more products.
Seek immediate help for poisoning signs
Being impossible to wake, very slow or irregular breathing, seizures or severe confusion can signal an emergency. Call emergency services; in Germany and the EU, call 112. Do not leave the person alone and follow the dispatcher's instructions. Give an unconscious person nothing to drink; a cold shower and coffee are not treatment. [2]
Vitamin B1 is a different medical question
Long-term heavy alcohol use can be associated with thiamin, or vitamin B1, deficiency. This requires separate nutritional assessment and does not justify an arbitrary hangover capsule. [3] Necessary treatment depends on the findings.
With possible physical dependence, stopping abruptly can be dangerous. Seek medical support for reducing or stopping, especially with shaking, sweating or previous withdrawal symptoms. Severe symptoms such as seizures require immediate help. [4]
Frequently asked questions
Does a vitamin supplement sober you up faster?
No. It does not replace alcohol metabolism and the necessary recovery time.
Can I drive safely with a hangover once no alcohol is detectable?
A hangover may still impair you. Arrange a safe alternative if you have symptoms.
Is vitamin B1 always a hangover remedy?
No. Possible deficiency associated with long-term heavy drinking is a different medical issue.
Should I leave a very drowsy person to sleep alone?
No. Impaired consciousness or breathing problems require an immediate emergency call.
