Vegan and raw vegan are not the same. A vegan diet can include cooked legumes, grain dishes, tofu and fortified foods. A raw-food rule excludes further options. Statements about well-planned vegan diets therefore cannot be applied to every raw vegan version without checking.
What vegan dietary planning requires
The German Nutrition Society identifies reliable vitamin B12 supplementation, balanced food choices and attention to other potentially critical nutrients as prerequisites. These include iodine, calcium, protein and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. A dietary label does not establish whether provision is actually adequate. [1]
| Question | What to examine in daily life | Possible adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Are meals sufficient? | Appetite, fullness and unintended weight change | Plan additional well-tolerated meals |
| Are protein sources included? | Look beyond fruit and salad | Allow cooked legumes or tofu too |
| Is B12 reliably provided? | A specific supplement plan rather than uncertain natural sources | Coordinate the plan and monitoring with a professional |
| Is eating becoming increasingly difficult? | Time, cost and social restrictions | Simplify rules rather than excluding more foods |
Soaking is not always sufficient
Dried chickpeas must be cooked before eating; soaking alone does not reliably address their heat-sensitive toxins. Precooked canned or jarred products offer a practical alternative. BZfE explicitly describes the need to heat raw seeds. [2]
One practical combination would therefore be salad with cooked chickpeas and a suitable dressing. It is no longer strictly raw but broadens the options. The meal should fit your nutritional needs and tolerance, not the strictest possible rule.
Do not romanticize warning signs as adaptation
Unintended weight loss, persistent exhaustion or new neurological symptoms require medical assessment. They do not automatically prove a specific deficiency, but they should not be dismissed as successful cleansing either. Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding and particular illnesses call for individual, qualified nutritional support.
Frequently asked questions
Is raw automatically more nutritious?
It does not establish the overall superiority of an entire eating pattern.
Can I replace B12 simply by eating more raw food?
A reliable B12 plan remains necessary with a vegan diet.
Is soaking dried chickpeas enough?
No. Use properly cooked or already precooked foods.
Is allowing cooked meals a step backward?
No. Sensible nutrition does not have to pass a purity test.
