Understanding Triglycerides: Blood Results, Possible Causes and Useful Next Steps

by Natur Total Team on Aug 30, 2026
Triglyceride: Werte, Ursachen und Senkung – sachliche Einordnung und Sicherheit

An elevated triglyceride result is not explained solely by the fat in your last meal. These blood fats are associated with diet, alcohol, metabolic conditions, medicines and inherited factors, among other influences. Elevated levels often cause no symptoms themselves. An abnormal finding therefore deserves an organized discussion even when you feel well. [1]

Which number was measured under which conditions?

Record the complete result with its unit, date and whether the blood sample was taken fasting. Triglycerides are not the same as LDL or total cholesterol. A favorable result elsewhere on the laboratory report does not automatically make the triglyceride finding unimportant.

NHLBI reference categories for fasting triglycerides in adults
Level in mg/dlCategoryHow to use it
Below 150Normal rangeStill consider the wider risk context
150 to 199Borderline highDiscuss testing conditions and the trend
200 to 499HighClarify possible causes and treatment
500 or aboveVery highTimely medical assessment is important

These NHLBI categories provide orientation, not a complete personal treatment plan. Do not apply them without checking when the unit differs or the sample was not taken fasting. [1]

Look for the cause rather than only fighting the number

For the appointment, record an ordinary week of drinks, meals, alcohol and notable changes. Include newly started medicines and supplements. The point is not to prepare for testing with one especially exemplary day, but to provide a realistic picture.

Specifically ask whether diabetes, thyroid or kidney problems, medicines or family patterns should be considered. These factors can affect the result. [1] A single dietary explanation should not displace a necessary investigation.

Turn general advice into a practical step

Agree on a specific goal and a follow-up appointment. As an organizational idea, you could replace a regular sweetened-drink break with an unsweetened alternative or schedule a suitable opportunity for activity. Markedly elevated levels need an individually agreed overall diet and treatment plan; a general online list is insufficient.

If an omega-3 product is suggested, bring its exact composition. Medical treatment with a particular preparation cannot be replaced with an arbitrary supplement solely because it says fish oil. Do not stop prescribed medicines independently.

When should you not wait for the next check?

Very high triglycerides can increase the risk of pancreatitis. [1] Severe persistent upper abdominal pain, especially with vomiting or feeling distinctly unwell, requires immediate medical assessment. This applies even without a previously known high laboratory result.

Frequently asked questions

Are triglycerides and cholesterol the same?

No. They are different components of a lipid profile.

Does one elevated result prove a particular dietary cause?

No. Testing conditions, the trend and other possible influences must also be considered.

Can I treat a very high level solely with freely purchased fish oil?

That is not an appropriate replacement for medical investigation and treatment planning.

Should I first change my diet if I have severe upper abdominal pain?

No. Such symptoms need immediate assessment.
