Sugar listed in plain yogurt's nutrition table does not prove that sugar was added. Milk contains the natural milk sugar lactose. Read the ingredient list as well to establish whether the product has been sweetened. Protein and fat amounts can also differ between yogurts. [1]
Four label questions instead of one universal winner
| Question | What to examine | Common confusion |
|---|---|---|
| Has sugar been added? | Ingredients and nutrition information together | All declared sugar must have been added. |
| How much protein does the portion provide? | Protein per 100 grams and container size | A thick texture guarantees a specific protein content. |
| How much fat is present? | The actual fat declaration | A product name replaces the nutrition table. |
| Is the product suitably tolerated? | Milk ingredients and, where relevant, lactose information | Lactose-free means free from milk proteins. |
Lactose intolerance is not milk-protein allergy
This distinction matters for product choice. Lactose-free dairy products can still contain milk proteins and are therefore not automatically suitable for milk-protein allergy. BZfE treats lactose intolerance and allergy as different issues. With a known allergy, do not conduct a self-chosen tolerance test. [2]
What do yogurt cultures mean?
Yogurt is produced by fermentation with lactic-acid cultures. That does not make every container a tested probiotic for a particular illness. Such claims require research matching the culture and intended use. Ordinary food use and a targeted therapeutic effect are different questions. [1] [3]
Breakfast does not need to become complicated
One of our kitchen ideas is plain yogurt with fruit and a small amount of sunflower seeds. For savory use, season unsweetened yogurt with herbs and spices as a dip. With a plant-based product, compare protein and nutrient declarations separately: similar texture does not mean identical composition.
A simple calculation helps compare portions. A hypothetical product with 4 grams of protein per 100 grams provides 8 grams in a 200-gram portion. Your package shows the actual value. It does not need to be marketed as a sports product for this calculation to work.
Refrigeration and clean utensils
Follow storage guidance and use clean utensils when serving. BZfE describes cool storage as an important practice for dairy products. A best-before date is also different from a use-by date; a date alone should not determine a universal eating decision for every opened package. [1]
Frequently asked questions
Why does unsweetened yogurt list sugar?
Lactose may be naturally present. Read the ingredient list as well.
Is lactose-free yogurt dairy-free?
No. Milk proteins may still be present.
Does a creamy texture prove a particularly high protein content?
No. The actual declaration is what matters.
Is every plain yogurt a digestive medicine?
No. A fermented food is not equivalent to a proven treatment for disease.
