Comparing Superfoods: What Matters Beyond Big Health Promises

by Natur Total on Apr 22, 2018
Superfoods – Pure Energie und Lebensfreude aus der Natur

An interesting ingredient does not need to be called a miracle food. Berries, seeds and nuts can add flavor and variety. Whether a product sold as a superfood suits your routine is better assessed through its actual use than spectacular comparisons.

A diet is more than its most prominent ingredient

The WHO identifies diversity and appropriate composition as foundations of healthy eating. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruit belong in that picture; one powder does not replace this range. Frozen vegetables and suitable canned foods can also play a role. [1]

A useful starting question is therefore: am I missing a practical ingredient I would enjoy, or looking for a shortcut for the entire diet? In the second case, expectations of the product are already too high.

Compare using the same reference quantities

Comparing 100 grams of dried powder with a small serving of fresh fruit does not answer a fair shopping question. Check the same units, then the amount actually eaten. Concentration does not automatically mean the usual serving supplies an especially large amount.

Four questions about a superfood offer
Advertising statementBetter comparison
“More nutrients than ...”Compare equivalent food quantities, processing and servings.
“Especially antioxidant”Ask about a health outcome, not only a laboratory result.
“Purely natural”Check all ingredients, added sugar and intended use.
“A daily must”Which specific nutritional gap is it meant to fill?

An example of cost per use

A hypothetical powder costs 20 euros for 200 grams. Using 10 grams each time gives 20 portions at one euro each. This calculation says nothing about effectiveness or a recommended amount. It simply shows why the package price alone is not very informative.

Next compare it with an ingredient you already enjoy: fruit with cereal, nuts as part of a meal or legumes in a stew. Their nutrient figures need not all be identical. What matters is whether the complete dish remains well considered and affordable.

Do not overlook processing and additions

Fruit juice is not automatically equivalent to whole fruit; the WHO counts sugars in juice as free sugars. Coconut fat, meanwhile, contains substantial saturated fat and is not the preferred fat source merely because it is plant-based. [1]

Capsules and concentrated extracts add another question: does the commercial product match the preparation studied? Supplements can have unwanted effects and medicine interactions. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Are superfoods inherently bad?

No. Flavor and use may suit you; exaggerated expectations are the problem.

Does a laboratory result prove protection against disease?

A measurement and a clinical benefit are different outcomes.

Must a good food be exotic?

Origin and marketing names are not prerequisites for a suitable menu.

Is a powder a complete meal?

This cannot be claimed without considering its composition and the other food eaten.
