In brief: Dietary fibre can support weight management because many high-fibre foods are filling, add volume and often have a relatively low energy density. Fibre is not a weight-loss trick: long-term body-weight changes depend on overall energy balance, eating patterns, physical activity, sleep and other factors.
How much fibre does the German DGE recommend?
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) gives adults a reference value of at least 30 g of fibre per day and also stresses adequate fluid intake. [1]
Rather than relying on a single powder, this amount can be approached with a mix of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.
| Food example | Portion in the DGE example | Fibre |
|---|---|---|
| Oats | 60 g | 5.8 g |
| Lentils, cooked/canned | 125 g | 5.8 g |
| Broccoli, steamed | 150 g | 4.8 g |
| Pear | 140 g | 3.9 g |
| Flaxseed | 15 g | 3.4 g |
These values come from DGE example calculations and are provided for orientation; natural foods vary in composition. [1]
Why can fibre help with weight management?
Fibre affects gastrointestinal transit, stool bulk and satiety, among other functions. [2] In practice, a plate built around vegetables, legumes and whole grains can provide more volume for the same energy than highly processed, low-fibre foods.
That can be useful, but it is not a guarantee. Adding a fibre powder on top of an unchanged diet does not automatically produce weight loss.
Food first, supplements for specific purposes
Whole foods provide other nutrients alongside fibre. Supplements such as inulin and psyllium husk can be useful for particular purposes, but they differ in swelling, fermentation and tolerance. See our comparison of inulin and psyllium husk.
Increase gradually rather than doubling overnight
If your habitual diet is low in fibre, a rapid increase can cause gas, bloating or changes in bowel habits. A gradual increase is usually easier to tolerate. Swelling fibres in particular require sufficient fluid; people with swallowing problems or narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract should not self-treat with certain bulking agents.
A practical way to increase fibre
- Choose whole-grain bread, pasta or cereals more often.
- Include legumes several times per week.
- Increase the vegetable portion in main meals.
- Use fruit, nuts and seeds as additions.
- Increase gradually over days or weeks if your gut is sensitive.
FAQ
Does fibre automatically make you lose weight?
No. It can support satiety and an energy-aware eating pattern, but it does not replace an appropriate overall energy balance.
Is 30 g per day a strict minimum?
The DGE calls 30 g/day for adults a reference value. It is dietary guidance, not an individual medical dose. [1]
Is inulin the same as “probiotic”?
No. Inulin is a fermentable fibre with prebiotic properties. Probiotics, by contrast, are live microorganisms in specifically defined products.
Why can more fibre cause gas?
Fermentable fibres are processed by gut microorganisms, producing gases among other metabolites. Increasing intake more slowly can improve tolerance.
